Buying the right levels of hotel insurance cover can be hard. But making the right decisions in terms of the features and benefits that you get might mean the difference between having adequate cover and having to pay to make something right yourself which might put your very business at risk.

One of the problems that many hotel owners come across is that a lot of general commercial insurance policies might not actually be set up to work from a hotelier’s perspective. They may offer a range of general features and benefits such as buildings and contents cover as standard, but not much else.

You may, of course, be able to add on specialist features and benefits to a basic standard policy but this may not be the most efficient or cost effective route to take. In addition, you may not find all the options you need in any case. So, could a specialist hotel insurance policy work better for you? In many cases you may find that it comes with other advantages.

Most policies of this type will give you all the standard benefits that you might expect plus some others that are useful to have. You may, for example, also be given employers’ liability insurance as standard – this isn’t just a ‘useful to have’ feature, it’s usually legally required if you employ any staff. Public liability insurance is also a key feature for many hotel owners. This will typically cover any claims for loss or damage by a third party against your business for which you are legally liable.

There are many features and benefits that may also be useful to your hotel and your needs. Cover elements such as business interruption, glass replacement, signage damage, and employee theft, for example, might save you a lot of money if you need to make a claim. Plus, a specialist insurance intermediary may well be able to help you find those optional cover extras that could suit any special needs you may have.

It might be hard to really know what kind of hotel insurance cover you need. Often a hotel owner will only realise what they should have had insured against only after an incident has occurred. Obviously this is not necessarily the best way to learn the ropes! As specialist brokers we can take you through the different cover options available so you can make sure you get the right protection for your hotel.

If you run your own business then you probably already realise that the insurance policy you take out to protect you and your business will be different to regular domestic insurance cover. In this kind of scenario your needs may actually be met by a specialist commercial insurance policy.

This may seem quite straightforward but finding the right kind of commercial cover may not be as easy as it seems at first. Not all businesses are the same – they operate in different sectors and have different insurance risks and needs. If your business is considered a high risk, for example, by insurance companies, then the cover on offer may not actually meet all of your needs and may fail to give you adequate levels of protection.

With a typical commercial insurance policy you may be given:

· standard cover such as building and contents cover;

· common commercial insurance features such as employers’ liability insurance (in most cases a legal requirement if you employ any staff) and public liability cover.

However, not all general commercial policies may be able to get you the sector specific features and benefits you need.

In some cases you may be better off looking for specialist help and cover. A shop owner, for example, may consider business interruption cover and glass replacement benefits key to their insurance policy. A Publican may be looking for freezer contents cover together with domestic cover for their own home and possessions if they live over the Pub.

You may well want to take some time to consider specialist commercial features and benefits as they apply to your business as well as standard cover. In some cases these benefits may come as part of a commercial insurance policy whilst in others you may be able to build your own specialist policy as an alternative so you get all the benefits you need.

Many people get their first experience of buying insurance when they insure their homes. So when insuring their business, they might assume that the same rules apply and they should simply look for the same kind of policy that gives them basic buildings and contents cover. That isn’t always the case. For a start, as a cafe owner, you need to look at commercial not domestic insurance and not just a standard business insurance policy either. Cafe insurance cover offers unique features and benefits specific to your business.

Of course, the standard business insurance cover you get is important but you may also want to consider what advantages the features and benefits of a cafe insurance policy could give you as well. This might help you better protect your interests and your business if something untoward does happen.

Possibly one of the best ways to choose cafe insurance is to think about what might go wrong and how a policy might protect you. For example, features such as business interruption cover, freezer contents benefits, glass replacement options, goods in transit damage/loss, and loss of license cover may help ensure you get the full protection that your business needs.

If you employ staff in your cafe then you are likely to have a legal obligation to take out employers’ liability insurance – this protects you financially if one of your employees has an accident at work and seeks to claim compensation costs from you.

Public liability insurance may also be worth considering as you’ll be dealing with the general public. This typically covers any claims against your business for which you are legally liable for accidents, loss or damage to people and their property (not just customers) coming to your cafe. Some insurance intermediaries will offer public liability cover as standard with their cafe insurance policies, so look out for this benefit when shopping for cover.

In summary, you may find it worthwhile therefore to look at specialist cafe insurance policy features and benefits before you take out the cover. A policy of this sort that is designed to meet your business needs may give you more peace of mind and financial protection compared to standard business insurance solutions.

If you take even a quick look at most standard commercial insurance policies, then you may think that they all offer pretty much the same levels of cover. This may be true with the more common types of features and benefits but, if you run your own restaurant, will this be enough for you? You probably know yourself that your business is a lot different to other businesses out there. Therefore, a specialist restaurant insurance policy could be the way to make sure that you and your livelihood are properly protected against the unexpected.

Think about your needs. Running a restaurant may have similarities to running a shop or a café but it isn’t exactly the same and maybe your insurance cover should reflect this fact. The kinds of things that cause insurance claims in the first place may, in some cases, have a more serious impact on your business than they would on businesses operating in other sectors.

So what might be important to you? Firstly, you may need to think about getting maximum protection in case something does go wrong.

* How might you cope if your restaurant was targeted by a group of kids who found it funny to break your windows? Glass replacement cover could help with the emergency boarding up and window replacement if this happens;
* What if you have a major power cut when your restaurant is closed and you lose all the contents of your fridges and freezers? Freezer cover could be a sensible option to consider;
* A customer that trips up on some loose carpet in your restaurant and injures themselves may well sue for compensation. With public liability insurance this won’t come out of your own pocket if you are found to be legally liable.

Of course, these are just examples of what could threaten your business financially.

As a business owner dealing with your own staff and of course your customers you may also want to take some time to think about them when you think about your restaurant insurance cover. You must, by law, have employers’ liability insurance to protect your staff if you employ people (though there are exceptions).

Public liability insurance may not be a legal requirement but you may find it essential, for reasons as highlighted in the third point above.

Let’s face it, you wouldn’t go to a hamburger restaurant and expect to eat a curry. Nor would you go to an Indian restaurant and ask for a burger. People specialise in their chosen fields and the insurance industry really is no different. A restaurant insurance policy may simply suit your needs better and give you and your restaurant – as well as your livelihood – optimum protection if something does go wrong.

Running your own shop really isn’t like running any other business. The commitment you need to put in (as well as the hours!) to get up and running ahead of the competition is immense and there are all kinds of matters you’ll need to deal with. One of the most important issues here is probably your shop insurance. Many shop owners will simply take out a standard business/commercial policy here but you might be better with specialist cover. Let’s take a look at why you might need these specialist benefits.

* Shop closure – let’s say you have a fire and you have to close your shop down. A standard policy might help you make good the damage but what about your income? Business interruption cover might be extremely useful to you in this case;
* Vandalism – retail outlets are often attractive to vandals and many shop owners will suffer from damage to their windows, shutters and doors on a repeated basis. A glass replacement feature could take care of any problems you have;
* Staff/customer injury – if you employ staff then you are in most cases legally required to have employers’ liability insurance. This will protect both of your interests and cover the legal liabilities if one of your employees has an accident or is injured at work. A specialist policy may also give you public liability cover and product liability cover which will protect third parties into the bargain;
* Seasonal Stock Increase – you’re likely to have more stock on your premises during seasonal peak buying times such as Christmas or Easter. A specialist shop insurance policy may often come with a seasonal stock element built in. This would allow you to claim an extra percentage to cover all your losses during specified peak buying periods.

It could be that many shop owners with standard policies do not have the right kind of cover to protect all their retail needs. The standard features and benefits within a standard business insurance policy will often be useful to a retailer. However, shops and retail outlets may need certain other cover elements that a regular business won’t. If you take a look at a shop insurance policy then you may see that these specialist elements might be just as important to the future success of your business.

If you work as a tree doctor, either as a sole trader or as the owner of a business, then it is vital to ensure that you have the right kind of insurance in place to protect you. Those who work in the forestry trade are often viewed by many insurance companies as a high risk and you may find that many standard commercial policies simply might not have the features and benefits that you need. You may in fact find that a specialist tree doctor insurance policy will be your best option.

There are a lot of factors to consider before you choose the right insurance policy to suit you as a tree doctor. There are of course some benefits that you’ll get that will be standard but you might also want to look at specialist policy elements that take your profession into consideration. So, what considerations should you take in to account when looking for a tree surgeon policy?

First of all you may want to make sure that your machinery and equipment are fully covered – the chances are you’ll use some expensive tools as part of your job and loss or damage can happen at any time, no matter how careful you may be.

You may also want to think about your responsibility to others when choosing your tree doctor insurance policy. If, for example, you employ staff then it is in most cases a legal requirement that you have employers’ liability cover in place. This will give you and your staff protection if they have an accident or become ill as a result of a job they do for your company and you are found to be legally liable.

Another consideration is professional indemnity cover. This feature will protect you if you give advice to a customer and that then turns out to be the wrong advice.

Finally, you may find that getting public liability insurance is also a good idea. This feature will protect against the legal liabilities if activities you do as part of your job cause injury, loss or damage to a third party or their property. The legal and compensation costs that you might be responsible for if you don’t have this cover could be extremely high. This might not be a legal requirement in the way that employers’ liability cover is, but many businesses and even individual customers could expect you to have it.

As you work in a specialist field that, to be frank, worries a lot of insurers because of the risks involved, opting for a specialist tree doctor insurance policy rather than standard business cover could afford you the unique protection you and your business needs. This might also work out to be more cost effective for you in the long run too.

If you work from home running your own business as so many people do, then you may think that you can cover all of your insurance needs through your standard domestic insurance cover. This may not, however, be the case and you may need to consider a specialist home office insurance plan – either as a standalone product or as an extra benefit added to an existing policy.

Although you may not run a business office in the traditional sense, your home office is just as important. Most people wouldn’t dream of not insuring their business premises but many people running a home business fail to get the right cover. At the end of the day this could leave them out of pocket themselves and could even put their businesses at financial risk if they don’t have relevant protection.

So, what kind of specialist home office insurance benefits might you need? For a start, you need to consider whether you employ any other individuals to work for you. If you do then you must by law have employers’ liability cover in place to protect their interests (although there can be exceptions to this). You may also want to consider public liability insurance which protects you against any third party claim for damages or losses caused to the them or their property by you, an employee or while on your premises for which you are legally liable.

Other important factors that you may want to consider include:

* your office equipment;
* any stock you store at home;
* any money you keep in your home office;
* your business records;
* professional indemnity insurance (this will protect you, for example, where a client sues you for wrongful advice);

Financial protection of this sort might be the difference between keeping your business trading and seeing it go under in the worst case scenario, should the unexpected happen.

Finally, you may also find that standard commercial policies may not suit your needs exactly – not all the features and benefits they offer may be necessary, meaning you are paying for cover you do not need. It may be worthwhile talking to a specialist home office insurance intermediary if you are at the stage where you need this kind of cover.

Every home business should look at getting an insurance policy that will provide them with adequate coverage. Your home insurance policy will often cover you for some of the contents of your home business, including PC’s, laptops and other small office equipment. However, it will not cover very expensive specialist equipment nor provide any public liability cover for visitors to your home business if any accidents should happen.

If you work from home, you should contact an insurance expert and discuss buying a home business insurance policy to cover the gaps in your existing home buildings and content policy. It is possible to get one policy that will cover your home, contents and business but in practice this is rare and often, the one size fits all, just does not work properly for all circumstances.

The kind of cover that is advisable for a home business owner will protect them if they are ill, unable to work, injured in an accident or the home office and stock room is damaged due to fire or other form of damage. The cover will also protect them if a business visitor to their home has an accident within the home boundaries.

As a quick summary, you should discuss with your insurance advisor:

1) Public Liability Insurance
2) Professional Indemnity insurance
3) Cover for your home business building
4) Cover for your home business contents
5) Cover for your business equipment when travelling
6) Cover for business interruption
7) Cover for your employees Cover for assault and injury

Ask the following questions when buying a home business insurance policy:

1) How much cover do I get for theft?
2) How much cover do I get for vandalism?
3) How much excess do I have pay?
4) How many business clients and visitors am I allowed to have?
5) Will I benefit from a no claims discount in years to come?
6) How do I make a claim?
7) What are the key exclusions?

As a rule of thumb, it is advisable to get three quotes before committing to any one business insurance policy. However, it is no longer necessary to phone around as there are plenty of comparison websites on the internet that will give you comparable quotes from different business insurance providers within minutes. The comparison websites are forever scouring the marketplace looking for best deals so that you do not have to look at getting multiple quotes from multiple websites!

Remember to read the small print very carefully. You need to know exactly what you are covered and what is excluded. You also need to be aware of all limitations. Make sure you buy the home business insurance that is right for your particular circumstances even though it might not be the cheapest! Make sure you are covered for all the types of risks you encounter on a regular basis. After all, when something does go wrong, it is important that you are covered and you can bet your bottom dollar something will eventually go wrong.

With the current economic situation still unbalanced, and the end of a calendar year quickly approaching, many small and large businesses are beginning to think of ways to cut costs in 2010. Traditionally one of the most expensive costs for any operation is in the area of commercial liability insurance for protection against fire, theft and employee injury. The good news is there are more companies than ever offering this kind of insurance, which means prices overall are down, and finding commercial insurance quotes is easier than ever.

The most popular, and probably the easiest, way to begin your search for a new insurance quote is to look online at various insurance web sites and advertisements. Because of how easy it is to answer a few questions and receive a quote back from a company, there is no reason to be able to get at least five cost estimates in an afternoon. As you surf around the net you will probably see many insurance companies you haven’t heard of before, and yes, some of these are very small companies. But since it IS your policy you are more than welcome to only request quotes from the largest agencies.

Another good place to gain commercial insurance quotes is from a local commercial insurance broker based in your town or neighborhood. Because these agents tend to represent hundreds if not thousands of small to medium sized businesses, they can usually push large companies for lower rates across the board. Make you speak with several brokers and ask which insurance companies they represent. In speaking with business owners it is usually recommended to contact at least three or more independent brokers.

Finally a great way to collect insurance information and consider a new company is through recommendations from colleagues and friends. At a local chamber meeting or other business networking event you can probably mention your need and get several names thrown at you. Don’t be surprised if you also get a few calls from insurance agents who were given your name and phone number.

The biggest key to getting competitive quotes for commercial insurance is as simple as asking. By spending time online, with independent commercial insurance brokers, and networking in your area, you will get plenty of information and estimates. Spend time going through each and you will more than likely be able to lower you business overhead in 2010.

Any type of vehicle can be used to deliver cargo, freight or precious items. Most commonly you will see small vans. What happens if someone causes you to have an accident? or you hit another vehicle? How will your business operate if your main tool for work is out of action?

When starting a courier business insurance can seem like a big expenditure. People know exactly what they are getting when they buy a van, but insurance can be a bit fuzzier. For example, do you really need insurance at all to be a courier?

The answer to that question is a resounding yes, it’s essential for a courier business to have insurance. What type of insurance is down to the business owner. Insurance for couriers comes in several types-

Goods in Transit Insurance covers the potential damage of goods on the vehicle whilst in transit. Goods in Transit doesn’t cover all goods, check what your policy covers.

Light Haulage Insurance offers similar cover to courier insurance and goods in transit but for a limited amount of drops per day, often 3.

Hire and Reward Insurance covers you for the carrying of other parties goods.

At the very least you need hire and reward insurance. It may not give you as much ‘cover’ as the other options but to be without insurance is a situation that may cost you business. Customer are reluctant to let their goods be transported and delivered without insurance no matter how safe you think you are!

It’s quite common for glass, fine arts, ceramic, antiques to be uninsured under the ‘goods in transit’ or courier insurance policies. These need to be specied as add ons to your policy. Make sure you find out what is excluded and whether it is financially beneficial to have these added on before you buy your insurance policy.

If you decide to trade without insurance, stop for a moment and think… How will you pay if your clients goods are damaged in an accident? How will you continue with your business?
