People who are interested in getting disability insurance that can’t get it through their employer (or who want more coverage than is offered by their employer) can get private or supplemental insurance. However, you should take care when choosing a policy to make sure that you get the level of coverage that you truly want and need.
The first thing you will want to do when choosing a disability insurance policy is to make sure that you go with a very reputable company. You want to make sure that they will be around in the future and able to pay out the benefits you need should something happen to you. For this reason it is a good idea to go with one of the larger companies that offer this type of insurance, or to research any smaller companies thoroughly through resources such as Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s to make sure that they are financially sound. More and more people are starting to realize how useful disability insurance can be. However, the best policies can get quite expensive, so if you are looking for this type of insurance you might want to try to find a way to reduce the cost. Typically policies cost between one and three percent of your salary. There are a number of options you can take advantage of in order to reduce the cost of this type of insurance.
First of all, if you get a group disability insurance policy through your employer it will be less expensive than if you get this type of coverage on your own. You really don’t have many options though, you have to choose between the few options they offer you. Continue reading ‘How to Save Money on Disability Insurance’ »

If you are considering getting disability insurance, you are on the right track. It is a good idea for most people to get this type of insurance. It will help to keep you from getting over your head in debt if something unexpected should happen to you. The basic policy will go a long way, but there are some optional insurance riders that might make the policy even more useful to you, especially if you are young.
One of the most useful riders for anyone to have is the residual disability rider. A lot of times when people are sick or injured they don’t just get sick or recover all at once. It is a gradual process, and they might be able to work part time or perform part of their job duties when they are in the process of recovery. Without this rider, their disability would cut off if they went back to work part time. The rider makes it so that they can work a part time schedule and get a portion of their salary from the insurance company to help make up for the decrease in salary that this would entail. There are a number of different types of insurance that might help to pay for your injuries and your salary should you be unable to work. For example, Workman’s comp will pay for injuries that occur at work as a result of you doing your job. If you are in an auto accident, either your auto insurance or that of the other person involved will pay at least some of the costs. However, the most comprehensive type of insurance for those that are unable to work due to illness or injury is disability insurance. Many employers offer some type of coverage to their employees. However, it is also possible to get supplemental disability insurance. Many people do without this type of insurance, though it can be very helpful.
If you have disability insurance through your employer, that is great. It is a good start. There are a few things you might want to keep in mind though. Because you are not paying the full premiums yourself, any benefits you receive through this coverage is taxable, so you will get less than the full amount. This coverage also is likely to pay less than 100 percent of your salary, and in some cases a lot less. Continue reading ‘Do You Need Supplemental Disability Insurance?’ »

A lot of people don’t bother getting disability insurance. They figure they don’t need it. However, this type of insurance can really make a difference should something happen to you that kept you from working for any length of time. Most people can’t afford to go without working for more than a few weeks or a few months. However, a difficult pregnancy or a long illness can keep you out of work for longer than that. Unless you have a lot of savings for emergencies or a lot of money in general, it would be a good idea to get this type of insurance.
Many people think that the disability insurance provided by their employer will be enough, but most of these policies have a maximum amount that they pay out per month, which is usually about 60 percent of your salary or even less if you have a pretty high salary since there is a cap on how much they will pay. Also, the benefits you get from work are taxed, so you will end up with even less than the 60 percent you might be expecting. A supplemental policy might be necessary in order to meet all of your expenses. Check into the insurance that is provided by your employer to see what the terms and conditions are so you are prepared should something happen. Continue reading ‘Who Needs Disability Insurance? Physicians make sure that others stay healthy and receive the treatment that they need on a daily basis, but too often neglect to ensure that they are protected financially in the event that they are injured and become unable to work. Many people automatically assume that their group disability coverage from their employer, worker’s compensation or other sources will be enough, but this is not always the case.
When you are searching for disability insurance for physicians, there are several factors that will affect the policy quote that you will receive. This is why it is a good idea to make sure that you shop around and get several price quotes before deciding on an insurance provider. Your policy will be affected by your gender, your age, your specialty, your income, your health, and your employment status. Maternity disability insurance is one plan that all working women should know about. Being pregnant is not technically a disability because it does not really impair the working capability of women. However, there are instances that some pregnancy conditions would prevent a woman from going to work.
There will be times that she’ll suffer morning sickness, nausea, vomiting and other conditions related to her pregnancy. Doctor would then usually order her to stay in bed and not go to work. This is where the benefits of maternity disability insurance come in. She will continue to receive a portion of her income which she can then use to pay bills, doctor visitations or hospital stay.
Here are some things that you should take note of before you apply for a plan: Insurance agencies views pregnancy a pre-existing condition. This means that if you are already pregnant when you applied then it would not be covered by the insurance. Instead, the plan will be effective only on your next pregnancy. If your job makes use of a disability insurance for its employees, you still have to inquire if maternity is covered in the plan. Take note that maternity leave and maternity disability insurance are two different things. Continue reading ‘Maternity Disability Insurance – For Mothers Who Care’ »
